Bukoto South parliamentary aspirant Rogers Matovu has donated fuel to more than 300 boda boda riders in Lwengo District, saying the initiative is intended to ease the transportation of voters who may face challenges reaching polling stations.
Matovu, who is contesting as an independent candidate, said the fuel will enable boda boda riders to assist elderly voters and persons with disabilities on polling day.
He urged the riders and the public not to interpret the donation as voter bribery, but rather as a facilitative effort aimed at increasing voter participation.
“The intention is to ensure that no voter is left behind simply because they cannot afford transport or are physically unable to walk long distances to polling stations,” Matovu said during a meeting with riders in Kyazanga Town Council.
The boda boda riders used the engagement to raise concerns about rising fuel costs, transport fares during elections, and the role they often play in mobilising voters at the grassroots.
Matovu acknowledged their concerns, describing the boda boda sector as a critical link between communities and essential services, especially during elections.
Addressing residents at the same meeting, Matovu said that although he is running as an independent candidate, he remains a committed member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
He called on voters in Lwengo District to support President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the forthcoming general elections.
After the meeting, Matovu proceeded with his campaign trail across several areas in Bukoto South, including Buzinga, Nakateete, Dongwa and neighbouring communities.
He appealed for votes while pledging to revitalise agriculture as a key economic activity in the constituency, arguing that improved agricultural productivity would help households overcome food insecurity.
He also promised to prioritise the extension of electricity to communities that remain off the national power grid if elected to Parliament, saying access to electricity is essential for value addition, business growth and improved living standards.
The donation comes as parliamentary candidates across the country intensify campaign activities ahead of the elections, with voter mobilisation, welfare support and service delivery promises increasingly shaping the race in Bukoto South and beyond.
